Analytical principle:
The ammonia gas sensitive electrode is a composite electrode that uses the pH glass electrode as the indicator electrode, and the Ag-AgCl electrode as the reference electrode. The electrode is placed in a plastic sleeve filled with 0.1mol/L of ammonium chloride, with the end of the tube closely attached to the indicator electrode’s sensitive membrane filled with a hydrophobic semipermeable membrane to isolate the internal electrolyte from the external test solution. When a strong alkali solution is added to the water sample to achieve pH≧11, the ammonium salt will be converted into ammonia, and the generated ammonia will react through the semipermeable membrane (does not allow water and other ions to pass through) due to diffusion and allow ammonium chloride to react within the electrolyte membrane layer, causing a change in electrode potential. According to Nernst equation, the measured electromotive force has a linear relationship with the logarithm of the ammonia nitrogen concentration in the water sample under at a constant ionic strength condition. So the potential value detected is able to determine the ammonia nitrogen content in the sample.
